The Abode of Snow Professor of the Archaeology of the Roman Empire Andrew Wilson 9781359160942 Books Reviews
I love this book. I loved meeting Andrew Wilson, a lover of adventure, courageous, intelligent, educated and someone who knew his poetry. His deeds and his thoughts are interesting. His adventure is fascinating, both for what he undertook - the enormity of the venture, the daring - and for what he saw the world of the Himalayas at the start of the 1800s. His observations on the people, especially the Afghanis, are particularly interesting.
He is the first westerner into many regions and through him we gain our first glimpse of a former world. When one considers the era in which he lived, his willingness to see life from another point of view is extraordinary.
Tibet was terra incognito; Europeans were not welcome. This also helps make his travels fascinating.
When I think of the dangers he willingly confronted, the gear he had to have, the lack of roads, and the wild nature of the land and the people, I find the whole undertaking totally astonishing and fabulous to read.
